All Blue Demons qualify for States

Christiansburg locked up the team championship early on and the suspense turned to whether the Blue Demons could qualify all 14 wrestlers for the state tournament next week. With 11 Blue Demons in the Championship finals, the task of qualifying fell to the 3 Demons in the consolations to work their way back to finish in the top four spots. Led by a toughman performance by Shawn Quessenberry, who had the only loss on the first day but came back to win 4 matches on Saturday, Luke Rakes and Keith Krafft also punched their tickets to Salem. Keith, Shawn and Luke finished 3rd to complete the full team's advancement.

In the finals, Devin Carter picked up Christiansburg's first 2009 Championship at 112. He was followed to the top step by Rich Eva, Tyler Miles, Derek Woody, Braden Carter, David Cheney and Jon Weber. Eva won in overtime and Miles and Cheney were able to pick up wins in the waning seconds of their matches.

Blue Demons Defeat Colonial Forge Eagles to win

Rumble on the River match up

In a tight match that came down to the last match, the Blue Demons finished their dual match season with a win over two time defending AAA state champion, Colonial Forge at Deep Creek High School. With both teams winning 7 matches each, Christiansburg prevailed by collecting 4 pins against none for the Eagles. Keith Krafft finished off the night and sealed the team win with a pin of junior Son Nguyen at 103. After falling behind 2-0 on a quick takedown by Nguyen, Keith was able to quickly reverse Nguyen and the match and by the second period was able to put Nguyen in peril a couple of times before picking up the pin.

Christiansburg now prepares to begin the post season with the River Ridge District tournament next weekend.

Blue Demons Defend Championship at the Va Duals!

The #10 Blue Demons defeat #9 St Marks of Delaware 29-27

Wrestling Videos on Flowrestling

The Blue Demons continued their hot hand on the national scene by defending their Va Duals Crown of last year. Christiansburg defeated national ranked #9 St Marks in the finals by the score of 29-27. Keyed by some great matches in both victory and defeat by the quickly improving freshmen, the Blue Demons look to move up even more in the national polls in their final "national" event of this season.

In the past two weeks of dual team action, Christiansburg has faced 7 teams that have been ranked in the national top 40 at some time this year and finished with a 5-2 record, losing only to #3 Apple Valley of Minnesota and #5 Ballard-Huxley of Iowa.

In the finals of the VA Duals, Christiansburg faced a team that not only had placed higher (4th) at the Beast of the East, but had placed twice as many wrestlers in that event. Key to winning the match were victories by Freshmen James Linkous and Tyler Miles. Both pinned older and more experienced wrestlers. Not to be overlooked though was the wrestling of Keith Krafft, Brady Epperly and Phillip Dowdy in defeat. Each saved the team points by keeping their matches close with more renowned and experienced opponents. In the case of Phillip Dowdy, at 285 he faced the reigning Beast of the East champion, Bobby Telford of St Marks. Telford came in to his match knowing he had to pin Phillip for St Marks to win the team event. Phillip wrestled a great match losing the battle but winner the war for Christiansburg.

Devin Carter, James Linkous, Braden Carter, David Cheney and Jon Weber finished 4-0 for the weekend.

Team Introductions at the 2009 Clash

Blue Demons Place 4th at The Clash

Led by Devin Carter, Jon Weber and some strong freshmen showings, the Blue Demons won their first day bracket and placed 4th in the toughest dual tournament in the country.  The Clash National Duals in Rochester, Minnesota is the number one rated Duals tournament in the country and with good reason.  Each team's roster is made up of not only ranked wrestlers from their home state but also national ranked wrestlers.  Several teams had multiple All Americans in their lineups.

Devin Carter works for the pin at the 2009 Clash  Jon Weber at the 2009 Clash

Devin Carter and Jon Weber finished undefeated, going 6-0, to lead the Blue Demons in the Championship bracket.  Freshman Brady Epperly finish at 5-1, defeating ranked wrestlers along the way.  Finishing 4-2 were Phillip Dowdy, Freshmen James Linkous, Derek Woody and Braden Carter.  Finishing 3-3 were Luke Rakes and David Cheney.

In the first day's-first round action Christiansburg was able to defeat Plainview-Elgin-Millville of Minnesota by the score of 38-24.

In the second round Christiansburg defeated the defending New Jersey State Champion High Point High School by the score of 49-19.  High  Point entered as the #36 team in the nation.

In the finals of the first day bracket, Christiansburg defeated #37 Hastings of Minnesota in a great match, 28-27. After falling behind early, Christiansburg stormed back to win the last 4 matches of the meet to win.  Jon Weber won the deciding final match to pick up the team victory.

On the second day, Christiansburg faced the nation's number #5 team, Apple Valley of Minnesota in the opening round.  The Blue Demons fell to this national powerhouse and eventual tournament champion, by the score of 40-19.

The Blue Demons then won the next dual vs #21 Simley of Minnesota by the score of 29-25.  Again the Simley school was able to build a small lead and then the Blue Demons were able to overtake them for the win.  James Linkous, Luke Rakes and Brady Epperly picked up some critical victories over highly ranked opponents.  This dual came down to Devin Carter to finish off the victory and he did so with a convincing 23-12 major decision.

Derek Woody applies the Craddle  Braden Carter at the 2009 Clash

In the final dual of the event the Blue Demons faced #7 ranked Ballard-Huxley of Iowa.   The Ballard team was made up 5 or 6 Fargo All Americans.  The Blue Demons were defeated 45-19.  James Linkous, Derek Woody and Braden Carter all gave Ballard's All Americans great matches, falling just short to their All American opponents.

Christiansburg finish 4-2 for the tournament.  They finished the championship bracket tied with Ballard and Simley with 1-2 records.  Through tie breakers set up at this tournament, Simley was awarded 2nd and Ballard 3rd, leaving Christiansburg as the 4th place team even with the win over the second place team, Simley.

The Blue Demons will again be tested in a Dual format this coming weekend when they attempt to defend their 2008 Championship at the Va Duals.

Jon Weber Wins Beast of the East!

Devin Carter is Runner Up, Braden Carter Places 7th!

The Blue Demons finish tied for 7th!

Jon Weber followed up his 5th place finish at the Ironman with a Championship at the Beast of the East, regarded by many was the toughest tournament in the country! Jon received a first round bye, picked up a pin and then went on a string of victories over the #11 seed, #3 seed and then in the finals knocked off the #4 seed, Ben Krakower(Blair) SR. Jon's semifinal and finals matches were some of the most exciting of the tournament as he weathered the early rounds to wear down his opponents and then picked up the wins, each in the final 2 seconds of the match. In the finals, Jon blocked a nice double leg shot in the final 10 seconds of a 1-1 match and was able to clear one leg and swing around behind for the win.

Braden Carter battled his way back from a first round upset to come back to place 7th. Braden lost to an unranked wrestler that made it to the semifinals and finished 4th in the tournament. Resnick of Pencrest may not have been ranked, but he was a very good wrestler that no one seemed to know. In Braden's match with Resnick, Resnick was able to score a quick takedown on a collar tie passby and was able to score quick back points to put Braden in a hole very early. I should note too that Resnick was able to do this same thing to every wrestler he faced including #1 seed and national #1 ranked Ed Ruth of Blair. After that match, Braden was able to pick up 3 pins and 2 decisions before running into #1 Ruth. Braden battled hard but got caught in one 5 point move that cost him, losing 6-2 to the national #1 Ruth. Braden then had the wrestler that had knocked Ruth out of the Championship side in the first round, Matt Mullet of Mount St Joseph's in Maryland. Braden picked up the pin and the 7th place finish.

Devin Carter picked up 3 pins and then defeated the #7 seed by a major decision. In the semifinals, Devin was up against the #6 seed and national #12 ranked Robert Deutsch or Eastern Regional in NJ. Devin was able to win, by a 6-1 margin. That set up a finals match up with Evan Silver of Blair. Silver came into the Beast as the # 6 ranked national 112. Silver was able to get in on a good shot late in the 1st period and picked up the takedown against Devin. Devin picked up a quick escape. For the remainder of the match Silver, who is very stocky and strong, was able to play defense and not open up any chances for Devin to score allowing Silver to pick up the 3-1 win.

David Cheney again was knocked out one round from placing, going 4-2. Rich Eva, Tyler Miles and Derek Woody went 3-2.

As a team, the Blue Demons finished 7th, ahead of at least 2 teams ranked higher than them. Not a bad job for a team that had 7 kids wrestling at the Beast for the very first time!
